What makes children’s hospitals different from a normal hospital?

Caring for your children can be the most important thing you can do as a parent and adult.  Children’s hospitals believe, and most parents would agree, that children should be treated with understanding, compassion, and carefulness to enable them to receive the best possible health care.  These hospitals are specially made to provide quality health care to your children, using the family as a strong factor in medicine.
Just as it is important to find a pediatrician to specially care for your children, finding a children’s hospital that fits you is also important in maintaining the health of your children.  Finding the right hospital may seem like a daunting task at first glance, but the truth is, you only need to do your research.  When finding the right hospital, you should keep a few things in mind.
The first thing you should do is to find out who will treat your child.  Check with the children’s hospital to see whether the doctors that will treat your children are specially trained in pediatrics.  You should also talk to other parents to get their take on the children’s hospitals that they have had experience with.  Check to see if the hospital can work with your child’s pediatrician or primary care provider.  Doing so will ensure that you can receive adequate medical treatment for your child outside of the hospital.  Go to the hospital and check it out with your own eyes.  Ask the questions such as: What is the patient-to-nurse ratio?  Is the hospital clean? What is the hospital’s record in treating the illness your child has?  Will you be allowed to stay overnight?
If you have found a children’s hospital, you should try to better understand the differences between these children’s hospitals and a normal hospital.  There is one obvious difference between children’s hospitals and a normal hospital — a children’s hospital specializes in treating children.  But what are some other differences between these hospitals?  Below are some of the differences between a children’s hospital and a normal hospital, and the reasons for them:
- Children grow and develop through many different physical stages on their way from infancy to adolescence.  Having a doctor who specializes in treating children will ensure that they understand how illnesses affect children specifically.  As your child’s body is still growing, many diseases and illnesses will affect children differently that an adult.  A children’s hospital will help your child grow into a healthy adult, conscious of their health and what they can do to improve it.
- 1 in 10 children has a chronic illness that requires continuing medical care.  Illnesses that are specific to children or illnesses that display different symptoms in children are the specialty of pediatricians.  Children’s hospitals have expertise that will ensure that your child is diagnosed and treated correctly.
- It is estimated by the American Academy of Pediatrics that only 6 percent of United States hospitals are equipped with pediatric supplies.  A children’s hospital will have the right equipment for children of any size.
- Children’s hospitals specialize in communicating with children.  The most important part of the doctor-patient relationship is proper, open communication.  Physicians and nurses who work in a children’s hospital should be better equipped to communicate with children.
