NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital: Leading The Way

In 1998, two world-class academic healthcare institutions in New York merged in what was an unprecedented event that created the largest and most comprehensive hospital in New York. The two merged hospitals were The New York Hospital and The Presbyterian Hospital, the new hospital: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. NewYork-Presbyterian employs over 13,000 health care professionals and hosts 2,200 patient beds. The hospital offers an improved quality of health care to its patients and increased availability of clinical services to a larger population and at lowered costs. The hospital has consistently plastered on the Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report from 1999 to 2009. They also brag some of the best doctors in all of the country, including Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Nicholas Schiff who have been named to Time 100, the annual list of the top 100 most influential people in the world.
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has some of the top-rated medical facilities in the world, and as a result, is renowned for the quality of patient care and its premiere research program that seeks the understanding of health problems and therapies to treat them. The merger of the two hospitals have spawned the development of three Centers of Excellence, including a Gamma Knife Center for the treatment of brain tumors, a Liver Transplant Center, and a Lung-Reduction Center for the treatment of severe emphysema and bronchitis. They are also one of only three medical centers with both Adult and Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Centers in the nation.
More recently, NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital has celebrated the 25th Anniversary of pediatric heart transplantation. In 1984, the Hospital performed the world’s first successful heart transplant, and since then, have been responsible for providing hearts to more than 350 children and continues to be among the nation’s largest pediatric heart transplant programs. Other recent news includes the world’s first delivery of intra-arterial Avastin directly into a malignant brain tumor, discovery of minimally invasive laser surgery in complicated of identical twin pregnancy, and discovery of the use of minimally invasive surgery as safe and effective treatment for rectal cancer.
